For 26 years, Earth Island has been committed to mentoring young, emerging environmental leaders and the vision that a nimble, streamlined organization can make possible the work of bold individuals with big ideas.

In October 2009, we will host the 10th annual Brower Youth Awards, North America’s top prize for bold, young leaders. At the event, we give 20-page print programs to all 900 attendees, and decorate the space at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco with posters and design elements.

Prof. Martin Linder & DAI Graduate Chris Morlock of MSL Design Introduce New Collection of Health Care Seating for Herman Miller

Florabella Tear Sheet Professor Martin Linder and DAI graduate Chris Morlock of MSL Design introduce a new collection of health care seating for a Herman Miller Company.

Florabella, the new healthcare line from Brandrud (a Herman Miller Company), has redefined performance in the healthcare environment.

Healthcare furniture has created many new challenges for furniture design. Long waits, tense situations, and a sense of vulnerability pervade the experience. Hospital acquired infections are a major issue facing healthcare providers.

Florabella is next generation of healthcare furniture that addresses this infection control issue. Materials such as food, liquids, to hair can easily be trapped in traditional designs, cannot easily be cleaned, and becomes a breeding ground for pathogens.

R.Buckminster FullerProfessor Hsiao-Yun Chu in DAI Department publishes book on R. Buckminster Fuller "New Views on R. Buckminster Fuller" (Stanford University Press, 2009) edited by Hsiao-Yun Chu, Roberto Trujillo

A serious scholarly look at the work of R. Buckminster Fuller is long overdue. This volume takes a broad historical view, discussing Fuller and his work in the context of larger social and cultural patterns. Fuller is a common thread in a critical cultural history that shows him to be both a participant in and a product of his times. By placing Fuller and his work in a historical framework, we arrive at a much richer understanding of both this self-made polymath and his times.
