Build It Green is a professional non-profit membership organization whose mission is to promote healthy, energy and resource-efficient buildings in California. Supported by a solid foundation of outreach and education, Build It Green connects consumers and building professionals with the tools and technical expertise they need to build quality green buildings. Build It Green fosters collaboration with key stakeholder groups to accelerate the adoption of green building practices, policies, and programs.

Build It Green is offering a Program and Events Internship to a qualified applicant. The internship is intended to provide meaningful and challenging learning in a fast-paced professional environment. This is a unique opportunity to get hands-on experience and get connected to the regional green building community.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

This position requires a very flexible schedule, as responsibilities involve evening and weekend activities for some events. The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following:


1. Provide assistance for various events, including trainings, home tours, presentations, workshops, meetings, banquets, and fund raising events ranging in size from 20 to 2,000 participants. Perform tasks which may include:

a. phone support, mailings;

b. data entry, internet research;

c. preparation of event collateral, support for event presenters, audio-visual logistics;

d. volunteer recruitment and coordination;

e. on-site management (setup, registration, and breakdown) of programs.

2. Interact with members, public agencies, utilities, green building professionals and homeowners.

3. Provide support for the Green Home Tour projects.

4. Solicit for in-kind donations for programs and events.

5. Assist fellow Build It Green staff on other programs as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

1. Baccalaureate degree (or at least Junior standing) from an accredited college or university.

2. Friendly, outgoing nature and an eagerness to serve Build It Green visitors and the public interest.

3. Self-sufficient office skills: ability to work with MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and Windows operating system. MS Access or other database experience preferred.

4. Marketing experience and/or event coordination a plus.

5. Proven organizational skills and attention to detail.

6. Excellent writing and communication skills.

7. A proven commitment to addressing a variety of environmental and public health issues and an appetite to learn about the rapidly evolving field of green building.

8. Familiarity with green building design, construction strategies, technologies and materials and the ability to articulate the environmental, health, and economic benefits of green building is desirable but not required.

TIME COMMITTMENT

Build It Green’s Internships last a minimum of six months and can be prearranged for up to a year. A longer duration may be arranged through the Internship Coordinator and will depend on performance during initial months. Interns work and train 30 hours per week based on a five-day work week. Individual schedules are flexible, but are usually centered around business hours, 8:30AM to 5:30PM. Weekend and evening work will be scheduled occasionally. The expected start date is on or around September 1, 2006.

COMPENSATION

Build It Green offers a financial stipend and covers select training expenses.

Stipend = $1,000/month

Build It Green will provide a training allowance of $150 and in addition will cover attendance fees for the following green building trainings:

-Certified Green Building Professional Training (16 hours & $395 value)
-Build It Green Workshop series ($20-$40 each)
-Green Remodelers Guild meetings ($15/month)
