Frequently Asked Questions

I am not a current Design major. Who should I meet with?

All prospective students, including current SF State students interested in applying to the Design major should call the School of Design office to make an appointment.

Call +1-415-338-2211

How do I cancel an appointment?

If you need to cancel an existing appointment, please do so as early as possible. Cancel an appointment from the cancel link included in the email confirmation, or from the "Appointment Calendar" tab of adviser's faculty profile page.

What should I bring?

You must bring your personal academic advising folder to each advising appointment. Once you have made an advising appointment, you should contact the adviser by email, briefly describe the reason for your appointment, and ask if there are any specific documents that you should bring. Consulting with your adviser before your meeting is especially important if you need assistance in determining which courses will be accepted for transfer credit to your Design major.

What is a personal academic advising folder?

Every student is expected to maintain a personal advising folder and to bring it to every advising appointment—it is a guide to assist you in your studies. Your personal advising folder should contain the following documents (and may contain other items pertinent to you):

  • Grade reports and unofficial college or university transcripts.
  • Degree Progress Report, and Advance Standing Evaluation (ASE) reports.
  • General Education (GE) and graduation checklists.
  • SF State semester grade reports.
  • Advising schedules or contracts completed before declaring the major.
  • Notes and documents from previous advising sessions.
  • Class registration documents and forms. (Incomplete grade forms, probation releases, course withdrawal forms, etc.)
  • Copy of your Design contract signed by the School of Design director, adviser, and you.
