Design can’t save the world, but it just might help. As the principal and creative director of a design studio that works exclusively on social change projects, Jay shares RallyRally’s approach to amplifying the impact of forward-thinking organizations through design. He pulls back the curtain on RallyRally’s process, tells stories about projects and discusses the challenges of running a business at the intersection of design and the public good. As a small studio, how do they land major projects with organizations like UNICEF? How can designers present serious subject matter in visually-engaging ways that portray all people with dignity? Can graphic design actually help improve lives? Jay dives into these topics and makes the case that we can go further when we go together.


Bio:

Jay is the founder of RallyRally, a Toronto-based design studio dedicated to social change. RallyRally works with forward-thinking organizations on causes ranging from climate action to human rights advocacy to equitable urban planning. Since establishing the studio in 2011, Jay has led the creation of brand identities, publications, websites and campaigns with organizations such as UNICEF, Evergreen and the City of Toronto. His work has appeared in Adbusters and his team has been recognized with three So(cial) Good Design Awards from RGD (The Association of Registered Graphic Designers). Jay grew up in the woods of northern Ontario before moving to Toronto for design school. He eventually fell in love with the big city, where he loves biking through laneways and imagining the possibilities.
