DEL: Digitally Engaged Learning Conference
SFSU Assistant Professor of Visual Communication Design Ellen Christensen and SFSU Assistant Professor of Journalism Josh Davis are co-presenting a panel entitled "Collaborative Co-Design and Journalism: Hybrid Media Narratives" within the "collectivize" track at DEL (Digitally Engaged Learning) 2020, hosted by Parsons School of Design.
Panel participants include Dr. Mario Garcia, Senior Advisor for News Design at the Columbia School of Journalism and CEO of Garcia Media; Heather Chaplin, Founding Director, New School Journalism + Design; and Lauren Traugott-Campbell, Design Director at Jacobin.
Ellen and Josh will discuss their interdisciplinary campus collaborations between Design and Journalism at SFSU—including their collaboration on a multimedia version of Labor Landmarks of San Francisco, in conjunction with Catherine Powell, Director of the SFSU Labor Archives.
Panel topics include: benefits and challenges of co-authorship and collaborative practices in visual storytelling, methods of sharing co-authorship and co-design with those whose stories are being told, ethical and practical challenges of repackaging historic and archival material in new multimedia formats, and speculative practices for the future of design and journalism.
