A) Subject: DCGN Seeking Potential Independent Study Students

The “Design Center for Global Needs” (DCGN) in the Department of Design & Industry at San Francisco State University is seeking qualified students that may be interested in assisting in Research & Development projects.

These projects may entail investigative research and assistance, informational contacts, data collecting, documentation and organizing of data, and project development. Students designated task will be based upon experience areas of interests and Center priorities which may involve, presentation and promotional graphics or design development in the following areas:

1) DAI Promotion/Publicity Campaign & 50th Anniversary Celebration:
Assistance in the strategic planning, development and promotion visual assets for the DAI department. Project task and implementation would entail collecting, archiving and digitizing material for the DAI Postcard, Poster, Brochure, Handbook, WebPage and portfolio promotional CD.


Development of promotional graphic material for the DAI 50th Anniversary Celebration Week:
November 8th - 11th
· DAI 50th Anniversary Alumni Portfolio Night: November 8th, 6:00-9:00pm, Rosa Parks Room, Cesar Chavez Student Center
· DAI 50th Anniversary Lecture/Symposium: November 9th, 5 – 8 pm
· EPT Banquet Tribute & 50th Anniversary Celebration:
November 10th , 6 – 10 pm
· DAI 50th Anniversary Picnic & Games at Lake Merced:
November 11th, 12:00 – 5:00 pm

2) Web Design and Development for the Design Center for Global Needs (DCGN)

3) “Dwell on Design Conference & Exhibition”: A Weekend of Design and Architecture Concourse
Exhibition Center, San Francisco, Sept. 15-17 2006. Design and architecture exploring the design issues of the day such as: prefab, sustainability, affordability, and urban design.

4) “Design for the Majority,” IDSA Special Interest Section” Assistance in the planning, development of Collaborative Workshop that will provide a learning, as well as teaching experience in developing “inclusive” design applications and solutions for the “Majority World.” The development of the working group will be formulated in conjunction with the IDSA Design for the Majority section in determining who the “majority” are, what their needs are, how to develop sustainable and appropriate solutions.

5) “NOMA International Conference,” Volunteer assistance, documentation in the implementation of National organization of Minority Architects conference which will be held October 12th – 14th, 2006 at the Argent Hotel, San Francisco.

6) “2nd International Universal Design Conference, Kyoto, Japan,” Assistance in the planning, development and implementation of this year’s 2nd International Conference for Universal Design in Kyoto, Japan, October 22nd – 26th, 2006. The conference theme is : “Considerate and Decisive - Listen to the Users and Deliver!”

7) NEA/Universal Design Leadership Initiative,” Assistance in the planning, development and implementation of the Universal Design Leadership project proposal. Development of proposals to carry out a project that will create greater public awareness of and demand for universal designed environments, by educating designers, consumers, educators, developers, city planners, and others on this important design process
8) “ICSID/IDSA CONNECTING’07 World Design Congress” Connecting to People and to Ideas,” October 17-20, 2007. Assistance in the planning, development and implementation of this year’s Connecting ’07. Theme: “Physical, Virtual and Cultural Connections.” We will explore the implications of an evermore connected world, devoting a day each to connecting physically, virtually and culturally. We will seek connections between design, business, brands, services, technology and society. We will offer the opportunity for you to connect with people from diverse design disciplines, backgrounds and nationalities.

9) “Visitacion Valley Community Development Corporation (VVCDC),” Assistance in the planning and implementation of designated development projects regarding the Current state of the Valley; the role of VVCDC; the overview of new development projects. The role of the VVCDC is to: INFORM residents; SUPPORT residents, community; PARTNER with residents, other planning groups; and ENCOURAGE participation. The review and design development of these goals will be pursued in conjunction with the VVCDC’s resident Rose Architectural Fellow.

10) “Architectural Foundation of San Francisco (AFSF),” Assistance in the planning, development and implementation of the “Build San Francisco Institute,” and educational programs. The Build San Francisco Institute has evolved into a full partnership with the San Francisco Unified School District as an integral part of the city’s public high school program. The Build San Francisco Institute offers fully accredited courses in Architectural Design and Urban Sociology. The Architectural Foundation of San Francisco is a nonprofit educational organization that involves San Francisco elementary and secondary students in a mentored appreciation of architecture, engineering, construction and the design process.

Preferred designated Independent Study Consultation hours would be, either:
*Mon. (10:00 - 1:00 PM);
*Tues/Thurs (2:00 - 5:00 pm),
*Weds. (2:00 - 5:00 pm), or
*Fri. meetings (11:00 - 2:00 PM). - Time periods are negotiable.
(Minimum of 6 - 8 contact hours need to be scheduled for Independent Study Credit)
