Internships and Industry Partners

Internships are an important part of a young designer’s education. The key is to understand your education’s two complementary components: first, the skills, knowledge, and methodologies you will learn in your classes. Then, on the job you learn professionalism, work ethic, and the all-important speed with which most design is produced.

The School of Design offers opportunities for internship credit through our DES 576 class. Students find internships either through opportunities forwarded by the office (check your sfsu.edu email regularly for these blasts) and through the office of Career Services. They also offer career development advice, such as interview skills, writing resumes and cover letters, and networking tips. Students in Design have worked at (and are working at!) Cisco, Adidas, Amazon, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and other large well-known companies and organizations. Students also work with community groups, startups, and small non-profits. San Francisco offers rich opportunities for students to work with a variety of different organizations.

Industry Partners

The School of Design at San Francisco State is proud to work with Diversify by Design, a coalition of industry, community, and educators dedicated to decolonizing the design professions. With a central purpose of breaking down the racial inequities throughout the industry, DxD is focusing on five critical, interconnected aspects of the design ecosystem: Exposure, Education, Experience, Employment, and Empowerment.
